Diet Origins

MyPlate is the most recent update in dietary guidelines presented by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Diet Philosophy

The diet can be followed throughout one’s life.  The guidelines offer a simple way to control portions without the need for weighing and measuring food at each meal. The plan recommends basing a daily diet around fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low fat dairy and whole grains.  It also suggests that water be consumed instead of sugary drinks.

Following the guidelines and incorporating daily activity can help to reduce excess weight and improve overall health.

Diet Structure

This diet strives to encourage individuals to choose the best foods from each food group and to maintain a balance between food intake and activity.  The plan suggests dividing a plate into sections.  When serving meals individuals should fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables, a fourth of their plate with whole grains, a fourth of their plate with lean protein and add a low-fat dairy source such as 1 percent milk. 

Food Restrictions

While this diet does not restrict food it does emphasize making the best choices for health such as choosing:

  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Lean sources of protein such as fish, poultry, seeds and nuts
  • Foods low in cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fats, salt, and added sugars

Supplements

There are no recommended supplements.  All nutritional needs are met by the diet.
